Welcome to jaguar Class!

Welcome to the Jaguar Class page.  This year we are extremely fortunate as the children will be supported by a number of fantastic adults.  Mrs Mewett, Mrs Stubbings, Mrs Blaikie and Miss Bishop will be working with the children alongside myself and we are very excited about the many activities and lessons we have planned in order to further the pupil’s learning. Some of the children may also have Mrs Richards, Miss Woodruff, Mrs Wright or Mrs Tames as their Maths teacher each morning, and the majority of the children will receive interventions with Mrs Tames, Mrs Stubbings or Mrs Dengate during the school year.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns at all about your child’s progress or happiness at school. Class Dojo is the fastest way to contact us as all the Year 6 teachers can see the messages. If you would like a face to face meeting then appointments can always be made at the beginning or end of the school day at a mutually convenient time.

We are really looking forward to getting to know your children and learning alongside them this year. We hope that they will settle quickly into Year 6 and their final year at primary school. We have got an exciting year ahead of us, with many mysterious and challenging topics which we know the children will relish.

Below is an overview of what we have in store for Term 1…

 Darwin’s Delights - A Voyage of Discovery

Ship ahoy! We’re off on an exciting expedition with Charles Darwin and his crew on HMS Beagle. Can you trace his route across the vast ocean? Stop at the magical Galápagos Islands to see the amazing species that helped Darwin develop his theory of evolution by natural selection. Do you know what’s so special about a lava lizard, or why the blue-footed booby has blue feet? See how animals adapt to their environment over time and learn how and why the human skeleton has changed since separating from primates. We will meet some of the world’s greatest explorers and naturalists and imagine how humans will evolve in millions of years. We are hoping to visit the former home of Charles Darwin - the site where the internationally renowned 'On the Origin of Species' was written. Ready to rumble? Let’s set sail!

Term 2

Who’s the Mummy?

Let’s travel back 5000 years to the dusty realms of ancient Egypt. Pupils will be visiting an “Egyptian tomb” and answering questions from the scrolls they find in the ‘burial’ chamber. They then study the different Egyptian myths and legends about how the world was created and learn about the Egyptian gods, especially the story of Isis and Osiris. Pupils go on to create a family tree of the Egyptian gods and explain why the Pharaohs were so important. In Geography, pupils learn about the location of Egypt and its principal features, before exploring facts about the human and physical features of the country. In art pupils will explore different types of Egyptian jewellery whilst in their music lesson they listen to Egyptian music and learn to keep a steady pulse to a prescribed rhythm.

Term 3

Champions for Change and Gallery Rebels

This unit gives the children a chance to learn about politics and their government. They will learn about the system of government in Britain; about the origins of democracy; how to create their own party logos and campaign posters; and about global issues that should concern governments around the world. We also hope to visit the Houses of Parliament to give the children a chance to see the seat of power within their own country. In art, we find out about the bizarre and eccentric minds of the gallery rebels. Art can be an act of rebellion. Can you change the world with a paintbrush, a thought, or an idea? Dream the dream, or show us your nightmares. What do you see? Watches melting? Wheels spinning? A shark in a box? Can you express yourself without words? Paintbrushes and sketchbooks at the ready. Let’s make art.


Term 4 and 5

WWII - The Battle of Britain- A Child's War

A siren sounds, a building crumbles, and a Spitfire zooms overhead. Take cover! It’s 1939 and Britain is at war. Deep down in the Anderson shelter, learn why nations are fighting and why child evacuees must make the long journey from their homes and families into unknown territory. Pupils will take part in a re-creation of an air raid practise as an introduction to understanding what life was like for ordinary people in the war.  The children will use drama to interview a survivor or someone who lived through the WW2. Pupils will consider the vital role-played by music during the war, focusing in particular on songs performed by Gracie Fields and Vera Lynn, whilst in art pupils study the influence of wartime posters.

In English pupils use their imagination to write about the life of children who experienced air raids and evacuation and in science pupils learn that light travels in straight lines through the context of a Spitfire pilot and what they can see through the cockpit window. We hope to be visited by the Homefront Bus which will help bring to life what it was like during the Second World War for those in Britain.


Term 6

Hola Mexico

Welcome to Mexico! Get ready to explore this unique country, from its towering temples and stunning geography to its pulsing rhythms and fun-packed festivals. Tummy rumbling? Concoct a traditional fruit cocktail or delicious Mexican meal. What’s on your shopping list? Go steady with the spices! Feel like celebrating? Design a flute, grab a drum, join a tribe and make some noise! Have you got what it takes to be chief? Let’s find out… Don’t forget to learn some words of Spanish too to help make sense of this vibrant world.

Our PE day is Tuesday.  This will remain the case for the majority of the year and any changes will be communicated through Class Dojo.  Children are now permitted to wear their PE Kit to school on PE Days.  They may wish to bring a pair of old trainers or football boots with them throughout the winter, should we complete our lessons on the field.  We will complete most PE lessons outside, unless extreme weather prevents us from doing so, so please wrap up warm!

During Term 2 we will be visiting Herons Swimming Pool for swimming lessons. These sessions will take place on a Wednesday, meaning PE kit will not be required on a Tuesday during this term only.


In Year 6 the children complete a range of tasks that will be set near the beginning of each term. This allows for more flexibility and choice in the homework to help the children feel motivated. Whenever a task is completed please send it into school (either in the homework book or through Class Dojo) so your child can receive feedback. Children in Mrs Tames’ maths group may sometimes receive additional maths homework. The children will also be expected to continue learning key words from the Year 5 and 6 spelling list using Spelling Shed and to keep practising their times tables using Times Tables Rockstars.

Reading at home

There is a continued expectation in Year 6 that children read at least 4 times a week to an adult, regardless of their ability. We ask that the children record a detailed comment about what they have read and that you sign their reading record once a week. We also encourage wider reading than just school books so please encourage them to read any text (book, magazine, manual etc.) which interests them. The children will be completing their Accelerated Reader quizzes in school.

Collection at the end of the day

Picking up your children at the end of the day - Year 6 children are dismissed from the Upper School Playground. Should, at any point in the year, your child be allowed to walk home or leave the school site independently at the end of the day, please ensure that the office and class teacher are made aware first.
