Crickets - Mrs Litchfield
Welcome to Cricket class! This year is going to full of fun and exciting challenges, which will get our brains working and minds learning. We will all work together as a team to help each other learn and gain more knowledge about the world around us.
Wider Curriculum – Term 1
To start term 1 we will be taking part in the whole school Learning to Learn Week. We will explore what resilience and perseverance mean to us as learners. We will also start meeting the Voices for Choices characters who we will use all year to assist our thinking about how we can make good choices at school for learning and behaviour.
This is a short history based learning theme. The children will consider their own past and ask questions. They will explore photographs and consider changes within living memory.
Later in term 1 we learn about dinosaurs to deepen the children's understanding of pre-history. We learn about dinosaurs, fossils and amazing discoveries of palaeontologists such as Mary Anning. We find out about herbivores and carnivores. In computing we see if we can control a robot dinosaur. The children deepen their understanding of mathematical and English skills through linked activities in the afternoons.
This term the children will also have opportunity to explore our Forest School. They will have a great time joining in with skills and crafts, whilst taking calculated risks in an outdoor environment on the school site. You will be informed in advance of the days your child will taking part so they can come to school dressed appropriately.
Wider Curriculum - Term 2
What can we see in our splendid sky?
There will be a lot happening in our sky over the next few months with Bonfire Night, the change of weather and Father Christmas visiting. We will represent fireworks by using the computers to create pictures and then in history, talk about the story of Guy Fawkes. We will use maps in geography to locate the 4 countries that make up the UK. Weather will be a big focus and we will use it to inspire dance, poetry, art and music. As the term comes to an end, we will be very excited that Christmas is getting closer, in R.E. we will answer the big Question, ‘Why does Christmas matter to Christians?’. In art, we will explore printing and design our own Christmas cards. Christmas Jumper Day and celebrations will make our celebrations complete.
Wider Curriculum – Term 3
Would you like to be an astronaut?
To help us answer our learning question we will design, create and review models of space rockets. We will find out about the first man on the Moon, learning about the message that was sent back to Earth. We will also consider what a space visitor would find on Earth if they came to see us one day too. We will also have a dress up day where we can come to school dressed as an alien, planet or astronaut.
Wider Curriculum - Term 4
What is our school like now and what was it like in the past?
This term we will be exploring our school. We will be looking at its history, starting in 1875 when it was first built. We will use a photo trail to discover parts of the school that are significant to its history and talk to a member of staff who used to come to our school as a child. We will also carry out a geographical survey. We will try to understand how a Victorian child might have experienced a day at school with a dress up Victorian day. We also would like your child to realise how they are linked to the Victorians by asking you to make a simple family tree for us to share in class.
In R.E. we will be asking ‘Why does Easter Matter to Christians?’ We will share our findings, Easter songs and some Easter biscuits with our families in an Easter Showcase.
Wider Curriculum – Term 5
Whose paws, claws and whiskers?
Soft fur, sharp claws and twitching whiskers. What’s your favourite animal? One that meows? One that barks? Or maybe one that scurries or slithers? From pets at home to animals in the zoo, let’s find out what animals like to eat and where they like to sleep. Who is a herbivore and who is a carnivore? How are humans similar to certain animals and what would you look like as a lion? After all that work, curl up and take a cat nap.
Wider Curriculum – Term 6
If you go down to the woods today you’re in for a BIG surprise. Foxes and badgers, voles and mice, beady eyed owls in the swaying tree tops. Beneath the leaves are tiny footprints – animal or imp? You decide. Deciduous or evergreen? Can you match a leaf to its tree? Can you match a petal to its flower? Let’s build a den, stick by stick and branch by branch. There will be lots of learning outdoors this term to finish our year 1 experience.
