Art and Design

Reculver CE Primary’s Art and Design curriculum inspires pupils and develops their confidence to experiment and create their own works of art. We offer pupils every opportunity to develop their ability, nurture their talents and interests, express their ideas and thoughts about the world, as well as learning about the rich heritage and culture of the British Isles and beyond. Through our high expectations, the children build on their prior knowledge and skills, using vocabulary that demonstrates understanding of the subject.

I see little of more importance to the future of our country and of civilization than full recognition of the place of the artist. If art is to nourish the roots of our culture, society must set the artist free to follow his vision wherever it takes him.         Pauline Kael

Reculver CE Primary’s Art and Design curriculum supports pupils to meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile and the National Curriculum end of key stage attainment targets. We enable every child to create, experience and participate in great arts and culture. They express themselves through a variety of mediums, using sketching to explore their ideas before commencing on a final piece. We see art and design as a means of communicating and thinking, of children becoming themselves and identifying as part of the community, spiritually and culturally.

Art teaches nothing, except the significance of life.   Henry Miller

A 5-part process offers progression of knowledge and skills. At the heart of the lesson will be key vocabulary. This will expand and support children’s knowledge of the subject as they travel through the school. A warm-up exercise will focus children and help them prepare for the lesson. They will then be exposed to the work of past and present artists, architects, designers and crafts people in order to gain inspiration to create their own work. Sketch books are  part of the process to help children visualise and explore ideas in preparation for their own individual art work.

One can compare art education to the solid foundation for a house - once it's built properly, it will hold any shape or form you will place on it.  Igor Babailov
