Welcome to Ladybird class! This year is going to full of fun and exciting challenges which will get our brains working and minds learning. We will all work together as a team to help each other learn and gain more knowledge about the world around us.
Topic – Term 1
Who lives in a castle like this?
In September, we investigate castles and what they would like to live in. I n music, we will listen to the Disney film themes and consider how they make us feel as they retell a story. Then we will using instruments to create our own music to describe castle life. We will be designing and building castles out of a variety of materials and construction sets, having talked through our ideas and drawn our castles first. We will also take some time to think about ourselves as we settle into our new classes and draw self-portraits. In science we will investigate materials. Our big question for RE will be What do Christians believe that God is like?
Topic - Term 2
Is every country Father Christmas visit cold?
In this topic, the children begin to learn about a variety of celebrations around the world and discover whether it is always cold at Christmas time. We talk about Artic animals and Inuit art. We will also be diving into their first Science topic about Seasonal Changes. This is also the term where the children demonstrate their singing and acting talents as they prepare to perform the Christmas Nativity as well as a whole host of fun Christmas activities. Our big question in RE is Why does Christmas matter to Christians?
Topic – Term 3
Who looks after us at sea?
In this term, we will be exploring the history of Grace Darling and how lifeboats are used to rescue people out at sea. We will also be exploring the seas around the UK and making a lighthouse. In art we will create 3D storm pictures and in music we will combine sounds to represent a stormy sea. We will learn about internet safety and make a poster connected to sea safety. The big question for RE will be ‘What is the good news that Jesus brings?’
Topic - Term 4
What would you need to know to be a gardener?
We are learning all about George Forrest, a botanist who went to China and brought back a variety of flowers that we still have in our gardens today. We will retell his plant hunt through China through the theme of We Are Going on a Forest Hunt. Closer to home, we will explore our own environment and create plant collages using a range of natural resources. In science we will consider a variety of plants, name the parts of a plant and find out how they grow. We will also take part in Easter activities and answer the RE big question, ‘Why does Easter matter to Christians?’
Topic – Term 5 and 6
What can I tell my pen pal about me and where I live?
During this topic we will be exploring cities in the UK and programming a Beebot to follow a map. We are going to find out about the history of Herne Bay and write letters to the people who live at the Miramar. We are going to be using our creative skills to design, make and evaluate fruit kebabs and later in the term, we will be making clay animals. We are going to be thinking of ways to stay healthy and how we our body changes over time. We are going to have a chance to explore different materials and work out which materials are best to keep us dry on rainy days. We are also going to explore our senses and find out about different sorts of animals. During our RE sessions we will be exploring the Jewish faith and finding out about what they believe and their special celebrations.

- Walk to Herne Bay to explore the local history.
Your children need to make sure they have their P.E kit in school everyday. Please could you make sure they have a suitable tracksuit and trainers for outdoor P.E and that EVERYTHING is named.
PE will be on a Thursday.
Earrings must not be worn for PE so please can your child take them out for PE days. Thank you.
Reading at home
We would like the children to read as often as they can. We ask that once you have heard your child read you sign their reading diary, noting the page read up to. We also encourage wider reading than just school books, please encourage them to read any text that interests them. Going to the library together is a fun way to share new books with your child. If your child reads every day, they will receive a certificate at the end of every 2 terms.
Busters Book Club
We like the children to read as often as possible but we take a data capture every Thursday morning to see who has read the night before and for how long. Children should read for at least 5/10 minutes on a Wednesday evening. This data gets recorded on the Busters Book Club bookmark and teachers use this information to award bronze, silver and gold badges to ‘Star Reader of the Week’. The class with the most minutes read or most improved reading will be awarded the trophy in school Celebration Worship.
Times Table Rockstars
Using your login please encourage your child to practise their times tables. This is an excellent App you can use to promote learning. Certificates are awarded to children who complete the challenges set. This will really help your children prepare for their times table statutory tests in Year 4.
The children receive a Home Learning Grid. This is a grid with a range of activities outlined for the children to explore. The tasks are divided into point values and the children are aiming to receive a given amount of points. The children can record their activities in a scrap book and these are shared with their class at the end of 2 terms.
We like the children to read as often as they can – and we can change their books daily if necessary.
We will also set mini tasks to take part in during some of their holidays and over weekends. We love to share their home tasks at school and to praise the children for working hard at home.
Phonic Screening Check
The children take the Phonic Screening Check in June. They will be required to read a list of words including both real and nonsense words. The assessment is carried out 1-1 with their teacher in a formal but caring way. The children will be used to reading words of this nature as our Read, Write Inc programme develops their phonic knowledge throughout the year. More information will be given at a meeting for parents and at parent consultations.
In our classroom we have our reflections area – This term we are looking at how God helps us to preserve when we are finding things hard, perseverance is now one of our school values. We will be adding to our reflection area throughout the year when our topic changes.
Adults in our classroom
In our classroom we are very lucky to have the wonderful Mrs Manning who helps us with our classroom learning in the morning and does intervention groups in the afternoon. We are also very lucky to have the fantastic Miss Reynolds and Miss Walford.
