The Grasshoppers (Year 2) Miss Charley Clarke

Welcome to the Grasshopper Class!

I am really looking forward to teaching all of Grasshoppers and can’t wait to begin some exciting topics with them.  Mrs Waite remains in Grasshopper class to support their children with their learning every morning.  We also welcome Mrs Wilson who will be joining us in Term 4 to support with different aspects of learning.  If you have any questions or concerns, please do speak to me at the end of the day.  Alternatively, please contact the school office to arrange an appointment.

Term 4

Town Mouse, Country Mouse

This topic allows us to learn about the world around us by comparing town life to life in the country. The children will love designing their own map for the BeeBots to travel around!  We shall be completing a traffic survey outside our school and will be using the data collected to create a graph as part of our cross curricular maths.  In science we will be learning more about plants.  In addition to this term’s science, we will take part in Science Week too. The theme is ’Our Amazing World’ We will be investigating micro-organisms and despite them being tiny, they truly are amazing!  In Art, we learn about the artist Slinkachu and we recreate his work (age appropriate) using digital cameras.  In RE, we will be learning about why Easter is important to Christians.

Term 5

Sowing and Growing and Two Queens

We will learn about what plants need to grow and set up experiments to see what happens when certain conditions are taken away. We get to plant a range of seeds and spend the Spring and Summer watching them grow. We also learn how the famous author and illustrator Beatrix Potter, created her famous character Peter Rabbit. As he is well known for stealing carrots from Mr. McGregor’s garden, we look at creating our own vegetable patches using a range of art techniques. We end the term on a royal note, learning about the Royal family. The children learn the National Anthem and enjoy recreating the Queen in a multi-coloured ‘Pop Art’ style!  In RE, we will begin learning about Islam and what Muslims believe.

Term 6

Trading Places

It is Carnival time! The children are transported to Rio where they learn about what it is like to be both rich and poor there. They design a costume to illustrate their dance moves, learn Samba and their sewing skills come in handy again as they design and make their own Brazilian flag! They learn the skill of 'Sgraffito' in art and love being immersed in a different culture. We continue to learn about Islam as our world religion focus this term.  We also have our Sports Day to look forward to!

Your children need to make sure they have their P.E kit in school every day. Please could you make sure they have a suitable tracksuit and trainers for outdoor P.E and that EVERYTHING is named, thank you.

The Grasshoppers have PE on a Wednesday afternoon but there may be an odd occasion when it changes day due to the weather.

Earrings must not be worn for PE so please can your child take them out for PE days, thank you.

Reading at home

There is a continued expectation in Year 2 that children read at least 5 times a week to an adult, regardless of their ability or stage. We ask that once you have heard your child read, you sign their reading diary, noting the page read up to. We also encourage wider reading than just school books. Please encourage them to read any text that interests them. Going to the library together is a fun way to share new books with your child.

In Year 2 we expect the children to read every night. They will also receive weekly Maths Challenges. They will also receive either Maths or Reading Comprehension each week. It will be given on a Friday and needs to be handed in the following week before Friday. On occasions, there may be a small project based on a topic within school to broaden the children’s knowledge and understanding. They will also be given the list of High Frequency Words, for the children to learn to read and write. Additional spellings will come home as appropriate.

Times Table Rockstars (TTRS)

Using your login, please encourage your child to practise their times tables. This is an excellent App you can use to promote learning.  Certificates are awarded to children who complete the challenges set. This will really help your children prepare for their times table statutory tests in Year 4.

This is another fantastic app that reinforces the learning we do in school.  Children are set tasks each week to complete. They can also choose to complete other activities, should they so wish.

Reflection area

In our classroom, we have a reflection area. This is an area where we can reflect upon the messages we hear from the Bible and our daily acts of worship.  Should children wish to write prayers at home, they are welcome to add them to our reflection area and share them with the class.

Picking up your children at the end of the day

Grasshoppers: On the small playground by the ramp.  Please be patient while I become familiar with the different adults that pick your child up.  If there is someone different collecting your child and they are not on our system, please be patient while I verify who they are.  Alternatively, please contact the office in advance who will inform me who is collecting them.

Thank you for your understanding and patience with this.
